The Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada (IPAC) provides knowledge for communities, national Indigenous organizations and health care providers, advocates for Indigenous peoples’ health, and acts as a support mechanism for Indigenous physicians, residents and students. IPAC is an Indigenous national organization with non-profit and charity status. We work with Elders and Knowledge Keepers and value Indigenous ways of knowing, learning, and doing. We are currently in a significant growth phase as we add three new members to our team. This is an exciting time as we now have the resources to better respond to the expressed needs of our membership. Our 2021/2022 activities include onboarding and supporting our new team members, developing a national mentorship program, creating a framework for physician wellness and joy in work, continuing our work in anti-Indigenous racism in medical education and healthcare systems, supporting student-led initiatives, and coordinating networking and continuing education events like www.PRIDoC2022.com
About the job: Membership and Mentorship Manager
The person in this new role will be in a leadership position with a significant level of responsibility. They will manage two portfolios within IPAC: Member Services and our Mentorship program.
IPAC is a member-based organization that has tripled its membership in two years. IPAC strives to respond to our membership’s growing and changing needs. The person in this leadership role will nurture and build relationships with the goal of improving the membership experience. The ideal candidate will be committed to continuing to increase IPAC membership so that we can serve all Indigenous physicians, residents, and student members who want to be part of the IPAC family.
IPAC Mentorship Program
Through the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Calls to Action 23/24 Medical School Report Card Survey, the Roundtable Discussions on Anti-Indigenous Racism in Medical Education, and in conversations with our members, we have had the opportunity to listen and learn. On-going support for Indigenous students throughout medical school and during transitions has been one of the most expressed needs. Through a grant from the Canadian Medical Association Foundation, IPAC is now in a position to launch a national formalized mentorship program for Indigenous medical learners, residents, early career physicians and physicians in transition.
The person in this exciting role will have the opportunity to make a significant impact in Indigenous medical education by creating a mentorship program that responds to our members’ needs. They will continue to assess the needs of our members to improve upon this program as it evolves. This position allows for creativity and autonomy with the support of the Director’s knowledge and experience.
Membership and Mentorship Manager Roles and Responsibilities

-Strives to improve the membership experience
-Creates and implements plans to increase membership
-Encourages members to participate in member benefits
-Maintains membership database
-Communicates the needs of the membership to the Board of Directors
-Communicates membership and mentorship information via newsletter and social media
-Designs and launches the IPAC membership program, with input from members
-Develops a creative and adaptable program that allows for a wide range of mentorship options
-Develops mentorship manual and written tools to support program participants
-Manages the IPAC mentorship program, with regular feedback from members
-Designs and implements onboarding for mentors and mentees
-Provides support to mentors and mentees when challenges arise
-Supports mentors and mentees when assistance is needed
-Assesses mentorship program for areas of improvement
-Nurtures relationships with partners and stakeholders

-Full-time employment contract
-2 weeks paid vacation (vacation blackout period: June 13 to July 22, 2022 due to www.pridoc2022.com) plus one paid organization-wide closure week each summer. Date to be chosen by the team.

-Ongoing home office stipend $30/bi-weekly
-Extended health insurance benefits after the 3 month probation period as well as a $200 annual spending allowance for health and wellness
-Employees are required to have access to an adequate internet connection and a workspace where the candidate is able to participate in video conferencing and online facilitation. Understanding that internet quality can be a challenge in remote areas, IPAC is committed to working with employees to compensate for costs associated with securing an adequate internet connection.

-Due to the nature of mentorship events, some weekends and evening hours will be required
-Some travel required, public health orders permitting.

What we are looking for in a Candidate
Potential candidates may not have everything on this list. We encourage applications from candidates who meet some of the qualifications and are excited about the job.
-Experience supporting members and growing membership
-Experience designing and coordinating mentorship or similar programs
-Ability to think strategically, and to seek out feedback to manage systems and improve on them
-Responsiveness to emerging needs and issues and ability to generate creative and people centered solutions
-Experience with people management, including coaching, supporting, and navigating interpersonal situations
-An understanding of particular barriers faced by Indigenous medical students, residents, physicians, and patients
-A familiarity with the TRC Calls to Action, the In Plain Sight Report and Joyce’s Principle
-A commitment to a culturally safe and respectful work environment
-Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and partners
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
-Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google tools, and Zoom
-Confidence with learning to use new technological platforms and tools
-Ability to attend mentorship events that may take place on evenings and weekends
Nice to haves
-Strong written and spoken French language skills
-Experience designing effective surveys
-Experience leading group discussions
-Experience with Wild Apricot
-Familiarity with medical education, healthcare, and/or the non-profit sector
-Experience using social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn
