Boozhoo! A big hello from where I live, work and play on unceded Coast Salish territory! I am joined on the 2019 elected IPAC board by Vice President Dr. Evan Adams, Secretary Dr. Kona Williams, Treasurer Dr. Sarah Funnel, Physician Director Dr. Melinda Fowler-Woods, Resident Representative Brendan Groat and Student Representative Alanna Martineau.
IPAC held its 2019 Annual National Mentorship Forum and AGM on the ancestral homelands of the Mi’kmaq and Beothuk at Memorial University in Newfoundand. Over 50 Indigenous physicians, residents, and medical students gathered as we shared knowledge through stories, our 2019 forum theme. Some of the highlights included a Sunrise Ceremony with our friends from First Light at Cape Spear, the most easterly place in North America and Mile 0 on the Trans Canada Trail, daily sharing circles, and learning from the stories of experienced Indigenous physicians Dr. Melinda Fowler-Woods, Dr. Shannon McDonald, Dr. Paula Kennedy, Dr. Veronica McKinney, Dr. Mandy Buss, Dr. Kona Williams, Dr. Jason Pennington, and Dr. Andrew Dutcher. A warm thank you to Dean Steele from Memorial for hosting our gathering and to Dr.Paula Kennedy for opening her home to us all for a social as we wrapped up am meaingful week.
IPAC has been chosen to host the biennial Pacific Region Doctors Congress (PRIDoC) 2020. This exciting event will take place at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre in Vancouver B.C., on the unceded, traditional territories of the Coast Salish: the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Upwards of 400 Indigenous physicians, residents, medical students, and other health advocates from throughout the Pacific Rim are expected to gather in Vancouver for the PRIDoC experience. Our 2020 Annual IPAC AGM will take place at PRIDoC 2020.
The theme of PRIDoC 2020 is Connecting to the Spirit of The Land. We are working with Elders from throughout our nation as we plan this important event. You can expect health and medical presentations important to Indigenous well-being, cultural events, and cross-national networking opportunities. I encourage you to join uis! Registration is open.
